John Cadbury

John Cadbury was a Quaker who believed that alcohol was the main cause of poverty, and so he started out as a distributor of tea, coffee and chocolate. His first shop was already very original and attracted many curious visitors because of the modern window that looked out from the street, but especially because of the Chinese employee dressed in traditional clothes. In 1831, he opened Cadbury Brothers with his brother, a chocolate factory that he had to leave shortly after for health reasons. John dedicated the rest of his life to social work until his death at the age of 88. Already at that time, he led campaigns against alcohol, against cruelty to animals and against child labour for chimney sweeps. John and his brother had conceived the idea of creating a model village for their workers that would take them away from the filth and slums, a project that their sons completed in 1879. The Bournville district has been dry (no alcohol in pubs, bars or shops) for more than 100 years. Its residents have fought to keep it that way, winning a court battle in March 2007 with Britain's largest supermarket chain, Tesco, to prevent the sale of alcohol in the town.
